No child road deaths in West Yorkshire over the last year

No child was killed on West Yorkshire's roads during the last 12 months, new figures have shown.

As children return to school this September, West Yorkshire Vision Zero is urging drivers, parents, carers, and communities to help keep that progress going.

The milestone marks important progress towards the partnership's ambition of eliminating all road deaths and serious injuries, but continued action is needed.

Simple steps such as driving at appropriate speeds, parking considerately around schools and speaking to children about crossing roads safely can help prevent tragedies and protect young lives. 

Based on data covering children aged under 16 years old between 1 August 2025 and 31 July 2026, there were no child road deaths recorded in West Yorkshire during the period.

Baroness Alison Lowe OBE, Chair of the West Yorkshire Vision Zero Board and Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime, said:

 “We will always remember the many children that have tragically died on our roads, including my own sister Debbie. 

“The fact that over the last year no-one had to go through the pain of losing a child, no classrooms lost a student forever and no friendship groups are incomplete is cause for celebration. 

“However there is much more to do so let’s keep this going together. We all have a role so please do your bit for road safety.”

Members of the public can continue to take advantage of free child car seat checking events which are running in each district. 

Parents and carers can have their seats checked by a qualified safety advisor who will give advice and assist if any issues are found.

Year 7 students are also set to benefit from a host of educational sessions over the coming academic year– this follows 18,000 pupils over the last 2 years receiving a theatre in education road safety input.
