People across West Yorkshire are helping to tackle unsafe speed through ‘community concern sites’.
If someone is worried about speeding drivers in their area, they can report it to their local council. This will then be considered for a speed monitoring assessment.
The results of that could mean that a safety camera van attends in the area and carries out enforcement action in direct response to community concerns.
A total of 64,195 offences were captured at community concern sites across the county last year (April 2025 to March 2026). In addition to those figures, behaviour change is often seen in the area, with offences dropping over multiple visits.
A new video has been released showing some of the drivers caught recently.
Speeding is one of the fatal five offences. Provisional figures for 2025 show that 7 people were killed and 69 were seriously injured in collisions where excessive speed was a factor.
Improving driver behaviour and ensuring safe speeds are key areas of focus in the West Yorkshire Vision Zero Strategy, which outlines a plan to reduce road deaths and serious injuries to zero by 2040 locally.
Alison Lowe OBE, Chair of the West Yorkshire Vision Zero Board and Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime, said: “All drivers travelling at safe speeds would be one of the most impactful changes that could be made to road safety.
“We’ll continue to educate, raise awareness, and where necessary enforce the law as we continue to work towards a safer West Yorkshire.
“My thanks go out to those members of the public that have reported their concerns and I would encourage others to do so.”
Paul Jeffrey, West Yorkshire Police lead for the West Yorkshire Safety Camera Partnership, said: “Anyone who is concerned about speeding can do something about it by sharing those concerns, and potentially save a life.
“Safety cameras enforcement in direct response to community concerns has been shown to deliver improved speed compliance. Achieving safer speeds will support our Vision Zero ambition to prevent avoidable road death and serious injury”
