Young people across West Yorkshire are being asked to help shape a real campaign to tackle serious violence in the region.

Mayor Tracy Brabin and the Violence Reduction Partnership are calling on children and young people aged 11 to 25 to submit their creative ideas on the theme of staying safe from gangs, crime and pressure from others.

Entries can take many forms, including short videos, photos, storyboards, written submissions or drawings.

The winning idea will be chosen by a panel of judges that includes children and young people, ensuring young voices help shape the competition from start to finish.

It will then be developed into a countywide campaign with the support of a professional company.

Anja Todorovic, is a member of the Mayor's Young Communities Network, which will form part of the judging panel. She said:

“I think it is really valuable for young people to take part in events such as this because it is a way to make their voices heard.

“Young people are ultimately the future, and it is up to them to decide the kind of society they want to live in.

“Staying safe from gangs and crime is particularly important in this day and age because it impacts everyone around us.

"In taking part, you can make a direct difference to people’s lives and their futures.”

The competition follows feedback from thousands of young people who helped shape the Serious Violence Strategy.

They told us they wanted more information and support to help them stay safe and avoid violence.

Mayor of West Yorkshire Tracy Brabin said:

“The voices of young people are at the very heart of building a safer, fairer West Yorkshire.

“We all know the devastating impact that gangs and serious violence can have on our communities, and I would urge every young person to unleash their ideas to shape a future where everyone can thrive.

“They have the power, creativity and insights to find real solutions. This competition provides a fantastic platform to share their unique perspectives whilst helping their peers to make the right choices.”

The competition runs from Tuesday 20 October to midnight on Monday 30 November.
