West Yorkshire's first Weaver Network bus station is opening this month

Heckmondwike's new bus station opens this month, as the first to be built with the Weaver Network name.

The new facility opens on Sunday 20 September and will be modern and accessible, unlocking easier journeys for passengers across Kirklees and beyond.

Passengers will benefit from new bus stands, detailed bus information, more indoor seats, a public changing places facility, cycle parking and improvements outside the building. 

Heckmondwike will be the first bus station of the West Yorkshire Mayor's new transport network, the Weaver Network, which will join up buses, trains, a future mass transit system, walking, wheeling and cycling. Upgrading bus stations as part of the Weaver Network will help make public transport more convenient, safe and affordable for people travelling around the region.
 
The multi-million pound bus station has been delivered by Kirklees Council in partnership with the West Yorkshire Combined Authority.
 
The bus station will also include solar panels and a green roof as part of the Combined Authority's commitment to more sustainable transport.

Mayor of West Yorkshire Tracy Brabin said:

“I promised that the Weaver Network would be something we could all be proud of, and Heckmondwike’s new bus station is a fantastic example of that commitment in action.
 
“Investing in modern, high-quality bus stations is just one of the ways we’re improving public transport across West Yorkshire.
 
“As buses come under public control, the Weaver Network will help us create a better-connected region that works for all.”

The West Yorkshire Combined Authority will host an opening celebration at Heckmondwike Bus Station on Tuesday 22 September, bringing together passengers, schools and businesses from the local community, as well as bus staff and councillors. More details about the celebration will be announced soon.

Councillor John Hardie, Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Highways and Transport at Kirklees Council said:

“The reopening of Heckmondwike Bus Station is a fantastic milestone for the town and for the many people who use it every day. It creates a great first impression for anyone travelling to Kirklees for work, education or to visit family and friends.
 
"I'd like to thank residents, passengers and businesses for their patience throughout the construction works, and for continuing to support local shops and businesses during this period of change.”

Heckmondwike is the first of three Weaver Network bus stations under development in Kirklees, with Dewsbury Bus Station due to reopen to passengers later this year and work recently starting on Huddersfield Bus Station.
 
The Combined Authority will begin rolling out bus franchising from Spring 2027, delivering publicly owned bus services across the whole of West Yorkshire by late 2028. This means that the Combined Authority will set the routes, fares and service standards for every franchised bus service.
 
By investing in bus station upgrades and bus franchising within the Weaver Network, the Combined Authority is making transport more reliable and flexible for passengers, encouraging people to make public transport their first choice of travel in West Yorkshire.
